The predawn hours of Thursday brought another wave of terror to Kyiv, as Russia unleashed a “massive combined strike” on Ukraine, triggering a desperate scramble for survival among its residents. For 61-year-old Iryna Moskaeva, it was a terrifying déjà vu. Trapped in her shattered apartment, unable to open her jammed door, she experienced the direct and brutal impact of the conflict for the second time. “All the windows in the room were shattered, and the door was jammed – I couldn’t open it,” Moskaeva recounted, describing her harrowing ordeal before firefighters eventually rescued her. Now facing homelessness, staying with relatives, and grappling with the immediate aftermath of no power or clothes, her immediate concern was simply getting to work on Monday. “How am I supposed to get there? There’s no power, no clothes to change into, there’s nothing.”

This latest assault on the Ukrainian capital was of staggering scale. Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched nearly 500 drones and more than 70 missiles, simultaneously targeting the capital from multiple directions in what was described as a comprehensive attack. While the vast majority of these projectiles were intercepted by Ukraine’s resilient air defense systems, a critical 33 still managed to make impact, leaving a trail of death and destruction.

The human cost of this relentless aggression continues to mount. As of midday Thursday, Ukrainian emergency services, corroborated by Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv city military administration, confirmed that 20 people had tragically lost their lives, with at least 85 more sustaining injuries, including two children. The grim reality is that these numbers are likely to rise, as search and rescue operations are still underway, with fears that more individuals remain buried beneath the rubble of collapsed buildings.

The scope of the damage across Kyiv underscores the indiscriminate nature of the strikes. President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that over 20 sites across the city suffered damage. Crucially, the majority of these were not military installations but “ordinary residential buildings.” The devastation extended to critical civilian infrastructure, including an ambulance station, a research institute, a hotel, and various other businesses vital to the city’s daily life. Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko characterized it as a “terrible night for Kyiv,” highlighting the “most significant destruction” observed in a residential building within the Darnytskyi district, to the southeast of the capital, where a section of the structure was “literally blown away.” Rescuers continue their desperate search for survivors in Darnytskyi, including a 15-year-old girl and her family.

The immediate aftermath also saw a massive mobilization of resources, with Ukrainian authorities deploying 110 emergency response teams to 59 distinct locations across the city to manage the widespread devastation. Such was the intensity and fear caused by the attack that some 52,500 Kyiv residents, including 4,500 children, sought refuge overnight in the capital’s subway stations, turning the underground network into a temporary sanctuary from the aerial onslaught.

Moscow’s military has framed this extensive assault as direct retaliation for what it describes as Ukrainian attacks on its own civilian infrastructure. The Russian defense ministry stated its forces conducted a “massive strike using high-precision, long-range weapons,” including drones, specifically in response to Ukraine’s “attacks on civilian infrastructure within Russian territory.” This declaration underscores the escalating tit-for-tat nature of the conflict, where strikes on one side often provoke a response from the other.

Indeed, Ukraine has intensified its own campaign against Russian territory in recent weeks. Over the past month, an unprecedented wave of Ukrainian drone attacks has targeted Russian energy infrastructure, marking a strategic shift. President Zelensky has openly articulated this as a key strategy aimed at pressing Moscow to conclude the ongoing conflict. Overnight Thursday, Ukraine’s military announced it had successfully struck one of Russia’s largest oil refineries in Kstovo, located hundreds of miles east of Moscow. Further reported strikes included a railway bridge over the Donets River, which Ukraine alleges is used for Russian military activities, and a Russian command and observation post situated in Kharkiv. Russia, for its part, countered these claims by asserting it had intercepted and destroyed 327 drones launched from Ukraine.

The disparity in reporting between the warring nations remains stark. While Russia claimed its latest strikes were precisely aimed at military and energy infrastructure across Kyiv and the Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava, Cherkasy, and Chernihiv regions, Ukrainian officials contend that the overwhelming majority of the damage inflicted was on civilian infrastructure and residential buildings, a claim supported by on-the-ground observations and casualty reports.

This escalating cycle of strikes highlights a dangerous phase in the ongoing conflict, where both sides increasingly target infrastructure, and civilians bear the brunt of the violence. The devastating impact on ordinary lives, like that of Iryna Moskaeva, serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of war. For a deeper understanding of global events, including the unfolding crisis in Europe ↗, continuous analysis of international relations remains crucial. The attacks demonstrate a clear pattern of escalation, leaving communities to rebuild amidst persistent threats, even as the world watches the humanitarian fallout.
